How can we help you?

You can merge or split cells using the MergeSplitCellsColor Merge cells and CellsUnmergeColor Split cell buttons on the Home tab, in the Cells group.

Merge cells

When merging, only the data from the top left cell of the range is saved in the new cell. Data from all other cells will be deleted.

To merge cells, select the cells, then use one of the methods:

Click the MergeSplitCellsColor Merge cells button.

Press the keyboard shortcut Alt+Ctrl+M (Option+Cmd+M).

Split a cell

Only a previously merged cell can be unmerged.

When you split a cell, the cell will be divided by the original number of cells. The data from the merged cell will remain in the upper left cell of the new range, the other cells will be empty. All these cells will inherit the formatting of the original merged cell.

For tables created in third-party editors and uploaded to a web application, the merge and unmerge feature is not available. The buttons on the toolbar will be inactive.

To split a cell, select the cell, then use one of the methods:

Click the CellsUnmergeColor Split cell button.

Press the keyboard shortcut Alt+Shift+M (Option+Shift+M).
