Ruler is a tool that is displayed along the left and top edges of the document editing window. It allows you to visually control and customize page margin settings, as well as paragraph indents.

The rulers can be used to control:

vertical and horizontal document margin sizes;

left and right paragraph indents;

the indentation of the first line of a paragraph.

Enable or disable rulers

To show or hide rulers, check or uncheck the Ruler check box on the View tab.

Page margin sizes

Document margins are grayed out on the rulers.

Change the margin size

1.Move the cursor over the border between the gray and white areas on the horizontal or vertical ruler. The cursor will look like a double-sided arrow arrow_horizontal or arrow_vertical.

2.Click and drag the field border to the desired size.

Set exact field dimensions

1.Select Page setup from the Menu.

2.In the window that opens, specify the desired margin sizes.

The horizontal ruler contains pointers for controlling paragraph indents:

Top pointer () - to set the first line indent.

Lower left pointer (▼) — to set the left indent of the whole paragraph.

Right pointer (▼) — to set the right indent of the paragraph.

Change paragraph indentation

1.Move the cursor over the required pointer. The cursor will look like a double-sided arrow arrow_horizontal.

2.Press the left mouse button and drag the pointer along the ruler.

Set the exact size of paragraph indents
