When cells are merged, that means that two or more adjacent cells are transformed into one. Cells can be merged horizontally and vertically.

To merge or split cells, do the following:

1.Select the desired cells.

2.Merge or split cells in one of the following ways:

On the Command menu, select Table > Merge cells or Split cells.

On the Toolbar, click merging_cells Merge cells or split_cells Split cells. The way the buttons are displayed on the Toolbar depends on the selected cells.

Right-click the selected area and select one of the following commands from the context menu: Merge cells or Split cells (the display of the command in the context menu depends on the selected cells).

Press Alt+Ctrl+M (option Option+command Cmd+M) to merge and Alt+Shift+M (option Option+shift Shift+M) to split cells.

The merged cell preserves the formatting of the data displayed in the first cell of the selected range (including the background fill, font outline).

The new merged cell will display the data from the first cell of the selected range, and the data in the other merged cells will be lost. Therefore, it is worth merging cells in advance until data is entered into them.

When splitting, the cell will be divided into the number of cells that was there before the merging. The data that was in the merged cell will be displayed in the upper left cell of the restored range, the remaining cells will be empty.

You can split only the cell that was previously merged using multiple cells.
