Change the nesting level
To change the nesting level for a single item in the list, place the cursor anywhere on the item or select the entire item. To change the nesting level for a few or all items in the list, select them in their entirety.
tip
If multiple items of different levels are selected in the list, each item is shifted one level relative to the current position.
- To increase the indentation, follow the steps below:
- On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click
Increase indent.
- Right-click to open the context menu and run the Increase indent command.
- To decrease the indentation, follow the steps below:
- On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click
Decrease indent.
- Right-click to open the context menu and run the Decrease indent command.
You can also use the keyboard keys to increase or decrease the indent:
- To change the indent of a single item in the list using the
Tab,Backspacekeys, place the cursor strictly at the beginning of the item. To change the indentation for multiple items, select them in their entirety. - Change the indentation:
- To increase the indentation, press
Tab. - To reduce the indentation, press
BackspaceorShift+Tab.Backspacekey does not change the indentation for multiple list items at different levels.
- To increase the indentation, press
tip
You cannot use the Shift+Tab keyboard shortcut to change the nesting levels of a list located in a table.
