Customize page margins and paragraph indents

You can adjust page margins and paragraph indents using the ruler above and to the left of the document.

To show or hide the rulers, enable or disable the Ruler option on the View tab.

The horizontal ruler contains markers for controlling paragraph indents:

  • Top marker (–) controls the first line indent.
  • Bottom left marker (▼) controls the left indent of the entire paragraph.
  • Right marker (▼) controls the right indent.

Quickly change a page margin​

  1. Hover the cursor over the border between the gray and white areas on the horizontal or vertical ruler. The cursor will change to a double-headed arrow.
  2. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the margin border to the desired size.

Set exact page margins​

  1. From theMenu, select Page setup.
  2. In the window that opens, specify the desired field sizes.

Quickly change paragraph indents​

  1. Hover the cursor over the desired marker. The cursor will change to a double-headed arrow.
  2. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the marker along the ruler.

Set exact paragraph indents​

  1. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph settings group, click the Paragraph button.
  2. Specify the desired indent sizes.
