Add page numbers, header, footer

Headers and footers are the top and bottom margins on each page of a document.

You can insert text, an image, a shape, a link, a table, or a page number into the headers and footers.

You can also use custom headers and footers for:

  • different sections of the document,
  • the first page of a section,
  • even and odd pages.
  1. Double-click the desired header or footer. You will enter header or footer editing mode.
  2. Enter text or insert an image, shape, link, or table using the toolbar.
  3. Exit edit mode by clicking the checkmark ✓ or the main document area.

You can also use the Headers and footers tool on the Insert or Page tab.

Add page numbers

  1. On the Insert or Page tab, click the Page Numbers button.
  2. Select where to insert the page number—for example, Bottom left.

The number will be inserted with the default settings.

Page numbering is part of the header and footer. In a single section, you can have one numbering in the header and one in the footer.

  1. Double-click the desired header or footer. You will enter header or footer editing mode.
  2. In the Settings menu, select Header settings or Footer settings.

A panel will open with a heading such as Header - Section 1. On this panel, you can change the header or footer Settings and Page numbers (see below).

You can also click the Header settings or Footer settings button on the sidebar.

Customize the header

  1. Open the header or footer settings panel (see above) and select the Settings tab.
  2. Set the header Indent from the top.
  3. If needed, enable the Different first page option. You can then create a unique header for the first page of the document or section. This option affects both the header and footer simultaneously.
  4. If needed, enable the Different even and odd pages option. You can then set up different headers and footers for even and odd pages. This option applies to the entire document, not to a specific section.

Customize page numbers

  1. Open the header or footer settings panel (see above) and select the Page numbers tab.
  2. Select the numbering Format — for example, Arabic numerals, Roman numerals, or letters.
  3. Select the page number Alignment — left, center, or right.
  4. If necessary, specify a starting number or letter in the Start from field.
  5. If you need to continue numbering, select the Continue from previous section option.

The page number in the header or footer appears as a shape with a border and markers. You can interact with it just like a regular shape: move it, resize it, and change its fill and outline colors.

You can edit the text inside the number: change the font, size, and color, or add characters.

  1. Double-click the desired header or footer. You will enter header or footer editing mode.
  2. In the Settings menu, select Remove header, Remove footer, or Remove page numbers.

You can also select any header or footer content with the mouse and press the Del key.
