Customize chart

You can customize charts using the special Chart pane. This pane contains two tabs: Settings for controlling basic parameters and Elements for controlling the appearance of chart elements.

The chart updates automatically when cell values change, as well as when you:

  • Hide or display rows and columns.
  • Add or delete rows and columns within the source range.
  • Sort or filter the data.
  • Merge or split cells.
  • Change the data format.

To add data at the edge of the source range, you may need to manually expand the chart's data range.

  1. Select the chart.
  2. Click the Chart settings button in the upper right corner.

You can also:

  • Double-click the chart.
  • Use the Chart settings tool in the sidebar.
  • Use the Chart settings tool on the Home tab, in the Chart group.

Change the chart type

  1. Select the chart.
  2. On the Home tab, in the Chart group, click the button for the desired chart type.
  3. Select an appropriate template from the menu.

You can also use:

  • The Chart Type list in the context menu.
  • The Type list in the Chart pane, on the Settings tab.

When you change the type, the data is preserved, but its layout and appearance may change.

Change the chart's data range

  1. Select the chart.
  2. On the Chart panel, click the Change data range button.
  3. In the sheet, select a new range with your mouse.

You can also drag the corner marker on the data range frame to quickly expand or contract it.

If you delete all data in the source range, the chart will appear empty.

Configure data parameters

  1. Open the Chart pane.
  2. On the Settings tab, in the Data series section, select the Create from columns or Create from rows option.
  3. To use the first row or column for labels, in the Plot area section, enable or disable the Use first row as labels and Use first column as labels options.

Customize the chart title and element appearance

  1. On the Elements tab, select the desired element (e.g., Legend).
  2. Configure its available appearance settings.

You can also right-click the chart or a specific element on it and use the Customize... tool and the Chart elements submenu in the context menu.
